Recognition |
|
Romeoville, IL - For owners looking to
minimize construction related litigation during roofing projects,
Bennett & Brosseau Roofing, Inc. has announced its most recent
recognition of CRSP Leader Contractor for its commitment to customer and
company safety through the Chicago Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA)/Chicagoland
Roofing Safety Partnership (CRSP) with OSHA Program. You also benefit
from Bennett & Brosseau’s high priority on safety with an efficiently
managed project and positive community image during the life of your

The CRCA/CRSP Program recognizes top roofing contractors who perform the
following:
Having injury and illness rates 10% lower than the current national
average.
Having a good firm history with OSHA.
Experiencing a modification rate (EMR) of .95 or lower.
Maintaining a comprehensive written safety and health program,
equivalent to OSHA, ANSI or NRCA guidelines.
Continued approval as a CRSP Leader Contractor is subject to an annual
review of the company’s safety documents including the OSHA 300 Log at
the end of each year. Bennett & Brosseau has retained its elite status
classification since the program’s creation in 2004.
Bennett & Brosseau’s risk management processes have produced exemplary
safety ratings over the last decade including an EMR average rate
significantly below the industry average of 1.0. In addition to keeping
you and our workers safe, this also means lower insurance rates for
Bennett & Brosseau which results in cost savings that can be passed to
you in the form of lower prices while maintaining rigid safety
practices.
Owners have time and again placed their confidence in Bennett & Brosseau
Roofing, Inc. for difficult and unusual projects. And, Bennett &
Brosseau’s clear focus on safety is summarized in the company’s safety
and health program’s opening statement: “The welfare of people and the
safety with which an operation can be carried out will be given higher
consideration than product quality, cost, production, and the
environment.”

Patterson Completes
Energy Efficient Roof Design Program |
ROMEOVILLE, IL – Bennett & Brosseau Roofing,
Inc. reports that George Patterson, its VP Operations, completed the
pilot SpecRight Program training session, which was developed by the
National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) and is supported by
several industry partners. The
program
provides value added tools to help building owners make informed
decisions about roofing systems, specifically on how to conserve energy
and protect the environment through roof system design, materials,

How to Reduce the Risk of Roof
Fires |
ROMEOVILLE, IL - A centerpiece in historical
Chicago community Bronzeville was destroyed when an accidental roof fire
recently ignited.
Torch-related fires have been increasing in frequency and severity since
the 1980s with the installation of torch-applied roof systems. And, some
insurance companies will not provide a roofing contractor with
commercial general liability insurance if their technicians are not
property trained in the safe application of torch-applied roof systems.
The roofing industry responded and released the Certified Roofing Torch
Applicator (or CERTA) program, training workers in the safe application
of torch-applied systems. The revised program, released in 2003,
incorporates the latest best practices and new industry requirements
such as pre-job planning, torch application safety, and post-job
activities.
Bennett & Brosseau's commitment to safe working environments includes
completion of this program. Its technicians hold certification and some
are also certified through the curriculum's Train the Trainer Program
and are now accredited trainers. Certification is valid for a period of
three years and it may be rescinded if at any time during the three year
period a certified worker is observed performing unsafe work practices
or behaviors.
In summary, when your next project is a torch applied system, know thy
roofer and request certification evidence because unsafe work behaviors
can leave you up in flames. |

Roofing Contractor Puts Lt.
Governor to Work |
ROMEOVILLE, IL - Bennett
& Brosseau Roofing, Inc. joined Lt. Governor Pat Quinn and
representatives from the U.S. EPA and
the University of Illinois at Chicago
for a rooftop demonstration of an innovative soy based roofing product.
The demonstration marked the second anniversary of the worst power
outage in North American History. The outage shut down 100 power plants
and 12 airports plunging 50 million people into darkness in the
Northeast and Canada at a cost of $ 6 billion.
Lt.
Quinn announced that Illinois is accepting the ENERGY STAR® Challenge to
cut state energy use by 10 percent by 2012. “Innovative technology such
as this soy based product helps to keep the focus on American energy
resources,” said Lt. Quinn, who was also named
Chairman of the Illinois Green Government Council earlier this year.
Bennett & Brosseau is an expert in designing and installing energy
efficient roofing systems such as GreenProducts’ biodegradable
ELMS soy based roofing system and is an ENERGY STAR partner. “Extending
the life of a current roofing system while positively contributing to
the environment results in economic, social, and environmental rewards,”
says James Brosseau, President of Bennett & Brosseau. The demonstration
finished with Lt. Quinn measuring the soy based coated roof surface
temperature against the black roof surface temperature. The soy based
coated roof produced a roof surface temperature that was almost 50% less
than the black surfaced roof, which means significantly less cooling and
heating consumption. “We commend the University of Illinois at Chicago
for their leadership in employing the latest roofing technology to help
create energy savings,” Mr. Brosseau further states.

Education is Key |
ROMEOVILLE, IL - Bennett & Brosseau Roofing,
Inc. recently presented a garden roof seminar at Chicago’s Center for
Green Technology to a mixed audience of consumers, construction,
architectural, and engineering professionals. Listeners learned critical
information about this ancient technology from an installation
perspective. James Brosseau, President of Bennett & Brosseau, opened the
session with the question, “What is the primary function of your roof?”.
While keeping water out of the building is chief, applications such as
rooftop gardening afford building owners a means to cost-effectively
reduce energy costs, add functional space, and reduce negative
environmental impact. The session highlighted the Company’s real world
applications including Chicago’s City Hall, which was the first U. S.
rooftop garden completed in 2001. George Patterson, VP-Operations of
Bennett & Brosseau, stressed the importance of involving all trades from
the onset to curtail delays and costly design changes. Plant selection
based not only on climate but also surrounding building heights and
subsequent shadowing was discussed too. The two hour discussion
concluded with information about the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED®
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system, which is
a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing
high-performance buildings. The LEED-NC Version 2.1 makes available
several roofing-related opportunities within its framework to assist
project teams in gaining points towards LEED certification:
- Sustainable Sites (SS) Credit 7.2 – Heat Island Effect (Roof): 1 point
- Energy & Atmosphere (EA) Credit 1.0 – Optimized Energy Performance: 1
– 10 points
- Materials & Resources (MR) Credit 1.1 – 1.3: 1 – 3 points
- Materials & Resources (MR) Credit 5.1 – Regional Materials: 1 point
- Materials & Resources (MR) Credit 5.2 – Regional Materials: 1 point

Japanese Roofing Professionals
Tour Local Projects |
ROMEOVILLE, IL -
Bennett & Brosseau Roofing, Inc. escorted 17 Japanese roofing
professionals, who are members of Tozai (which literally means “East
West”) Asphalt Association, Tokyo, on various roofing projects to learn
and compare U.S. and Japanese roofing techniques. During their 12-day
stay in the U. S., the group also toured projects in New York, Las
Vegas, and San Francisco.

Established
in 1956, the Association assists roofing professionals in developing their
business and have been their representative in legal and industrial
issues. There are 13 chapters throughout Japan and they hold 134 member
corporations.
James Brosseau, the company’s Vice President, selected
three projects for the group to tour including Chicago’s City Hall
rooftop garden, Chicago Avenue Pump Station’s slate and copper system,
and University Center’s rooftop garden, plaza paver and APP modified
bitumen systems. While Japan’s rooftop
garden technique is over 20 years, the group had a number of questions
pertaining to the application at City Hall, which was the first U. S.
rooftop garden viewed. Questions encompassed installation of the
waterproofing membrane and application, maintenance concerns as well as
system configuration.
The Japanese contractors were impressed by the
workmanship and plan on sharing their experience with over 850 members

Exceptional Value for Roofing
Dollar |

IL - Bennett & Brosseau Roofing, Inc. has delivered superior roofing
services throughout the Midwest region, building upon its expert
knowledge and innovative achievements with a succession of difficult and
complex projects since 1971. The company’s extensive client portfolio
includes renovation and new construction structures for historically
significant landmarks such as the Chicago Avenue Pump Station (awarded
Honorable Mention through the National Roofing Contractor’s Association
prestigious 2004 Gold Circle Awards - Innovative Solutions), City of
Chicago’s first rooftop garden at City Hall, world’s top 100 tallest
high-rise residential buildings such as River East Center, Marina City I
and II, and The Fordham. Bennett & Brosseau also retains around the
clock emergency repair and maintenance services for a range of customers
including manufacturing giants such as Corn Products, Smurfit Stone
Corporation and leading retailers such as Dominick’s Finer Foods and

Personalized customer care, cost efficiencies, and accelerated project
schedules are benefits derived from Bennett & Brosseau’s single source
roofing methodology. By integrating over 300 service years of combined
roofing and waterproofing expertise, the best design and engineering
professionals, the latest application technologies, and exceptional
quality materials, Bennett & Brosseau delivers a total roofing solution
to its clients in the shortest amount of time.
With one contract, Bennett & Brosseau assumes full responsibility for
completing the entire roofing structure including fabrication of custom
sheet metal and siding. Moreover, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing
subcontractors are coordinated and scheduled as each project scope
dictates. James Brosseau, Vice President of Bennett & Brosseau says,
“The roof is one of the most critical structures of a building. Improper
design and inferior installation are the leading causes of roof failure.
Couple this with minimal routine maintenance and a building owner or
manager dramatically increases his or her risk as well as liability
exposure. By involving all parties at the onset of the process, we can
ensure the highest quality project with the utmost efficiency.”
Bennett & Brosseau’s design-build team evaluates the big picture to
achieve a complete understanding of critical factors that could impact a
project’s schedule and budget. Labor, equipment, and material
availability are key issues considered in designing the overall
construction plan. Notwithstanding, the single source of responsibility
is a crucial factor in initiating a fast track project and keeping it
there. Combine this with engineering efficiencies and customers receive
exceptional value for every roofing dollar. |

Roofing Contractor Recognized as
Key Contributor |
Romeoville,
IL – Bennett & Brosseau Roofing, Inc. recently received recognition as a
key team contributor for its innovative roofing solutions at the Bank
One Corporate Center project, located in Chicago Loop’s Central Business
District. The 37-story office and retail skyscraper is constructed on
the site of the Fair Store, which was completed in 1892 and demolished
about 15 years ago. The new building, however, reused the Fair’s
existing foundation infrastructure. Midwest Construction recently named
the Bank One project “2003 Best Commercial Project of the Year”.
A
fast-track schedule and lack of exterior access challenged Bennett &
Brosseau to provide alternate delivery methods for the 36,000 square
foot 11-story tower and 36,000 square foot 37-story building roofs.
Tight scheduling demands and harsh weather conditions required
additional manpower during the holiday season to complete the 12th floor
tower garden roof installation, which complements the technological
sophistication of the building’s exterior image. The roofing assembly
included a hot rubberized asphalt system covered with a landscape
garden. Installing 6,100 concrete pavers atop the main building roof
required a carefully orchestrated, labor intensive effort. Says Mr.
George Patterson, Operations Director for Bennett & Brosseau Roofing,
Inc. “Material transportation was conducted via a hoisting system and
because of construction sequencing, each of the 6,100 - 150 pound pavers
were then hand carried and set in place without disruption to the newly
set in penetrations.” The installed paver system provides durability,
protection and performance for the hot rubberized asphalt system while
simplifying repairs and maintenance.
Additional challenges of this award winning project included the unique
construction of the exterior cornice work requiring an innovative
solution to ensure a weather tight seal. A resolution was quickly
supplied assuring that a water-tight seal would be enacted before the
adjoining coping system was mounted. Moreover, the landscaped garden at
the tower roof was originally scheduled for immediate installation
following the build in of the hot rubberized system. However,
construction progression indicated otherwise. Observant that the
specified exposed membrane sheet would be left uncovered and would
experience UV degradation if left exposed beyond the manufacturer’s
recommended time span, Bennett & Brosseau proactively recommended a
product upgrade that would withstand deterioration to UV while
maintaining a water-tight, warrantable system.
Says James Brosseau, Vice President of Bennett & Brosseau Roofing, Inc.
“Innovative problem solving is the cornerstone of our business. Without
this and a knowledgeable, forward thinking team, we would be just
another roofer. We are honored that our effort aided in the Bank One
Corporate Center project winning Midwest Construction’s prestigious 2003
Best Commercial Project of the Year award ”. |

Roofing Contractor
Sensitive to the Environment |
Romeoville, IL –
Bennett & Brosseau Roofing, Inc. partnered with Green Products, Inc.,
manufacturer of agricultural oil based waterproofing membranes for low
slope roof assemblies. The Environmental Liquid Membrane System (ELMS)
brings advance polymer chemistry based environmentally friendly
components to the industrial coatings market. All constituents of the
ELMS family are 100% approved by the U.S.F.D.A. for food contact. It’s
adhesion to steel, masonry, and low-sloped roofing assemblies combined
with its 100% waterproofing capabilities makes it a perfect candidate
for many industrial applications. ELMS Natural Bitumen Jacket is an
Energy Star and UL Class “A” approved waterproofing membrane designed
for use over low-slope roofing systems where ponding water exists.
Additionally, Bennett & Brosseau is an authorized installer of Sunoptics
Prismatic Skylights, which are designed to maximize the amount of
natural daylight available to bring into the building without the leak
opportunities, heat gain, condensation issues, or fall risks associated
with standard skylights. That is why Wal-Mart Stores, the largest user
of daylighting in the world, has chosen the Sunoptics Prismatic Skylight
to illuminate over 800 of their stores, reducing energy AND creating a
better shopping environment.
Actively engaging in green technology is second nature to Bennett &
Brosseau. Their roofing adeptness was critical in delivering an
innovative, water-tight garden cover for Chicago’s City Hall Urban Heat
Island Initiative project. The assembly produced a roof 70 degrees
cooler than surrounding conventional roofs, which reduced energy
consumption and increased stormwater control. Since then, a profusion of
green technology projects have been completed through Bennett &
Brosseau’s creative turn-key approach, which means less ambiguity and
potential cost savings to its clients. James Brosseau, Vice President of
Bennett & Brosseau Roofing, Inc. says, “We are committed to developing
strategies that reflect our customers evolving needs while maintaining
the integrity of the roof assembly. This includes adapting conventional
roofing approaches to increased energy efficiency and environmentally
friendly building products and solutions that benefit our employees,
customers, and community. It’s a win win situation for all involved.” |
